His likeness in a real museum replica was one of the very first exhibits on display at the Independence Science and Technology Center when it first opened. \nThis event is free and open to the public. We invite 12 lucky students between the ages of 6 and 16 to attend our 2026 Spring STEM camp  held on Tuesday\, March 17th and Wednesday\, March 18th from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. This is a two day camp. We will be learning about significant archaeological sites in Kansas\, learning the basics of archaeology\, and putting out skills to the test! \nSeating is limited to 12 students ages 6 to 16 years. African American author\, photographer\, and filmmaker Gordon Parks was well known for his documentation of American life and culture. Born in Fort Scott\, Kansas in 1912\, he is one of the most esteemed image makers of all time. In this presentation\, photographer Ann Dean discusses the impact and inspiration found in Parks’s books: The Learning Tree\, A Choice of Weapons\, and Half Past Autumn. These books help illustrate Parks’s mother’s teachings centered in love\, dignity\, and hard work\, and provide a starting point to talk about his struggles\, choices\, and triumphs – all great life lessons for those searching to find their way in this complicated world.
